Times Union Wins 11 State News Publishers Association Awards

Honors for News Coverage, Columns, Special Features, Headline Writing and Photography

ALBANY – The Times Union has won 11 2021 Excellence Awards from the State News Publishers Association in categories including breaking news, special features, opinion writing, headline writing, page design and photography .

Competing in the 50,000 to 75,000 circulation category, the paper won the Distinguished Breaking News Coverage award for its work on the resignation of former Governor Andrew Cuomo last August.

NYNPA honored two of the special sections of the Times Union: last summer’s edition of Upstate Traveler as a top feature supplement and a Black History Month section from February 2021 as a supplement. distinguished news.

The newspaper’s photo team won the top Distinguished News Photography award for coverage of the clearing of an activist encampment outside the Albany Police Department’s South Station in April 2021. Most of the action was filmed by Paul Buckowski, with additional footage by Lori Van Buren and reporters Rob Gavin and Eduardo Medina.

Van Buren won two awards, for Distinguished Sports Photography and Distinguished Features Photography, while photo editor Will Waldron won for Distinguished Online Photo Gallery for his images of the “ring of fire” solar eclipse sighting.

Chris Churchill won for Distinguished Column Writing, while Kristi Barlette was honored for Distinguished Online Blog.

Greg Dayton took home honors for writing distinguished headlines (“Blend of the day: Incognito Grande” crowned a story about Stewart’s Shops having to go without its beloved logo coffee mugs due to chain issues. supply) and Distinguished Page Design/Presentation.
